Australian Shepherd Train

Bred originally in California to herd livestock, the Australian Shepherd is a very intelligent andAustralian Shepherd.jpg energetic character. His strong instinct to work is makes him a favorite for obedience trials and agility competition. These dogs are recommended for experienced owners with a sound understanding of dog psychology who aren't shy about taking a firm hand. For first time dog owners the Aussies can be too much to handle.

If you do decide on an Australian Shepherd remember that he is a working dog. The instinct to work and constantly meet challenges means that he will be happiest when he has a job to do. Left with little to occupy his physical and mental energies he may well turn to destructive activities such as problematic barking, anxiety, and aggression toward other dogs.

High energy levels of both mind and body means these dogs are the definition of active. They love to run and to play hard for long time periods. Their instinct to herd can come out as barking and nipping or nudging that isn't always compatible with families. Highly developed loyalty can sometimes lead to seriousness problems of separation anxiety. This is a miserable thing for the dogs who suffer in the extreme. It's also a big stress on the owners. To avoid this you must not leave your dog alone for long periods. He's definitely not the kind of dog you can put outside in the yard on his own and go about your day. This is nothing more than isolation in his view.
