Ways to Handle Barking Dogs

Dogs use their voices much like we do. They bark to communicate. Maybe they want to say that there'sBarking Husky.jpg a strange person or dog in the area or that they need to go out or have some pain or discomfort. They may be asking for something, food, exercise or just attention.

That kind of barking is reasonable, done with a purpose in mind. The other kind of barking, the problematic sort, is a result of the dog's boredom or frustration. Dogs are, for the most part, very social and crave attention. They also have energy levels that make adequate exercise essential. If those needs aren't met they become bored and frustrated which results in incessant barking.

That's no fun for you or anyone else in earshot. And, consider the feelings that have driven your dog to this unnatural behavior.

There are several things you can do to make life more quiet and comfortable for everyone.

The obvious thing to look at first is how to change your dog's situation to alleviate his boredom and frustration. Be sure to give him plenty of exercise. That will vary with the age and breed of your dog, but as a rule of thumb, two long walks and a third shorter one will be adequate.

He needs an hour of active participation in play or training every day. In addition you can see that he has toys and games to keep his mind occupied. The puzzle toys involving hidden treats are popular with dogs. Many dogs do spend long hours alone during the work day and owners need to realize that the dog's greatest desire is to spend time together.

If he loves a certain game or activity try to make time to share it with him.

The second element that can contribute to problem barking is the dogs physical environment. If he can see out of his area, a chain link fenced yard, for example, he will naturally be encouraged to bark at passersby. He's influenced by his territorial instinct to protect his home and family.

When he barks and the intruder passes out of his sight he naturally feels he's done a good thing. If you can provide your dog with an area of adequate size that he can't see out of it will help to cut down on barking.

If you put all these suggestions into use and still have a problem barker you might consider the special training collars available. The citronella collar mists a fine spray of scent the dog strongly dislikes whenever he barks.

The other option is a collar that is triggered by barking to emit a loud unpleasant sound. Use these as a last resort. Remember you're effectively punishing your dog for using his only means of communication.
Shock collars are simply inhumane. Don't even consider them.
In most situations plenty of exercise, attention and the right environment will take care of problem barking. Stop dog barking and make your life happier.
