Golden Retriever Training

Golden Retrievers are among the most popular breeds among people who want a relaxed andGolden Retriever.jpg gentle pet and companion. Their reputation for intelligence and loyalty is well deserved.

Golden Retriever puppies are little honey colored balls of energy who can get into all sorts of mischief. They entertain themselves doing all the things puppies are infamous for; digging, chewing, barking and generally behaving like any other puppy.

Golden Retriever TRAINING

Older Golden Retrievers respond wonderfully to training and what behavioral problems they have are usually easily corrected.

If, for example, your dog tries to jump up on people, don't try to push him down as he'll interpret that an invitation to play. Instead raise your knee and make contact with his chest with enough force to cause minimal discomfort. Another option is to fill a water gun, and after sternly telling him “No” squirt him in the face. Usually only a couple of times will do the trick. You can simply ignore him entirely when you come home. Give him no attention at all until he is sitting and calm. The message that good behavior will have a better payoff than jumping up will soon sink in and you'll both enjoy your greetings a lot more.

To put a stop to problem barking you can use a barking trigger to cause him to bark. The door-bell is a good example. Stand at the open door with your dog. Ring the bell and encourage him to bark. After a few moments hold a treat in front of him and give the “Quiet” command. When he stops barking give him the treat. Gradually increase the time between the command and the treat so he is learning to be silent. When you have that down, go to the next step and change the treat to praise. This should have corrected the behavior within a week of practicing a few minutes per day.

Golden Retrievers deserve their reputation as outstanding pets. Just remember a little Golden Retriever Training and a little patience and consistency and the two of you will be great friends.
