Not much is more annoying than a dog that barks all night or goes on and on for no reason. No matter that barking is a natural behavior for all dogs, if we and our dogs are to get along in the real modern world incessant barking is not an option. We want to be able to stop dogs barking.
This problematic kind of barking signals that something needs to be corrected in the dog's environment. Boredom, fear, loneliness and stress can lead to continued barking. If the situation isn't addressed and corrected promptly the dog may well adopt the barking as a bad and hard to break habit.
We don't want to stop the dog from barking altogether as it is his only way to communicate pain, fear, hunger, even happiness as well as alerting us to intruders. What we need to do is address the dogs situation with care and honesty.
It won't serve any purpose for either you or your dog if you don't understand and then honestly evaluate your dogs need for attention, exercise and socialization. If you're serious about shouldering your responsibility you must make a commitment to see that all these needs are met. Be sure he has adequate walks and active play time as well as training periods and toys to engage his mind and his body. A happy and well adjusted dog is far less likely to develop problematic barking.
As with most areas of training consistence and positive reinforcement will be the best way to teach your dog when barking is acceptable and when it isn't. Harsh correction should be avoided in favor of praising and rewarding desirable behavior.
When you're sure you've provided your dog with all he needs and the barking persists you may want to consider a training collar that emits either a citronella spray or a loud noise when the dog barks.
You must teach your dog the “Quiet,” command. First you'll need to initiate the barking. The doorbell works well here. Simply open the door and hit the bell. When the dog barks allow him to go on for a few moments and then hold a treat in front of the dog's nose, while giving the command. Be sure to use the same word whether it be “Hush” or “Quiet.”
When he stops barking to sniff then give the him the treat and praise him. Go though the exercise again several times until he gets the hang of it and them repeat it a few times each day. In no time he'll understand what you expect and the two of you will be a lot more popular with everyone in the neighborhood. And that is it for Stop Dogs Barking.
