Training for Dogs

Training for Different Breeds

Congratulations on your decision to get a dog. Being a dog owner is one of the most rewarding 5 dogs sitting.jpgexperiences imaginable. You and your dog will share all kinds of adventures and have good times and struggles but it is sure to be a wonderful time.

Now that you've decided on a dog take a little more time to think about what kind of dog will best fit into your lifestyle. It's not all about you. Remember that different breeds have specific needs if they are to have happy, comfortable lives.

The common thing to do is choose a breed based on size. The apartment dweller may be more comfortable with a toy poodle than a bull mastiff but that isn't the only thing to think about.

Issues to consider in addition to size are the levels of energy of both you and your dog. The notion that big dogs have more energy and therefore require more exercise isn't true. Generally the medium breeds need the most exercise, although there are exceptions. If you or the dog has a problem keeping up with the other, it will eventually effect the quality of your lives and your relationship. If you love distance running or Frisbee completion you'll be happier with an Australian Shepherd or a Doberman than with an English Bulldog. If you prefer to spend you free time with a book and a fire you may want to consider the Bulldog. Size does matter, If you live in a small condo and are at work all day the impracticality of a Great Dane is pretty obvious. The situation may call for a toy breed or at least a medium sized pet purely for logistical reasons.

While you're at it, take time to do a little research on which breeders are reputable and be aware of the requirements for veterinarians, groomers, boarding facilities etc. that you'll be needing once you have your new best friend home.

Nutrition and Health for your Dog
Because of the selective breeding that has gone on for hundreds or even thousands of years to produce the huge variety of dogs with their differences in size, coat, gate, etc. a lot of problems have developed in some purebred dogs. These can manifest as painful ailments later in a dog's life. Talk to a vet and do some research on these to determine if your breed may have specialized nutritional requirements to minimize the problems. He may also require medications or treatments to deal with some of these issues.

Temperaments of Different Breeds
As you consider which breed may be best for you one tip is to keep in mind and be honest about how much experience you have with dogs. If you haven't had a lot of interaction with them you should look toward a companion breed. These are dogs who haven't been developed to do a certain sort of job. The herding dogs such as Border Collies and Australian Shepherds are wonderful dogs with good temperaments and plenty of intelligence but the energy levels can often be a problem for the novice owner. Hunting breeds and those bred guard duty can be too much for many owners. The breeds considered to be companion dogs are bred for quiet even temperament and do make fewer demands. Of course, dogs are all individuals, mutts or purebreds they have their own personalities and there are exceptions to all the rules. The breed characteristics are a real consideration and you'll do well to take the time to research which breed may suit you best.
